Sometimes it can be hard keeping in the loop of on going research and new developments in the marine world, or just the environmental world in general. So I have compiled a list of my personal favourite websites for accessible and (fairly) understandable environmental news and updates
Hakai is a website I really enjoy for environmental news. I find the articles well written and often on really unusual or niche research. They’ve got a nice variety of article lengths, and they also had a podcast where you can get an audio version of their weekly feature story!
The guardian have a really good environmental section and I find them a good source of mainstream media. Their articles are accessible and not behind a paywall. They also have a section within their environmental category, highlighting marine news under their “Seascape” feature.
The conversation is a great site to read an accessible article actually written by the author of the research or expert in the field. There’s no middleman journalist accidentally blurring the lines or miscommunicating the most vital part of the research findings. Just experts talking about what they know best! They have both a section on the Environment and also one on Science and Technology.
Maybe its in my British nature but I’ve always found the BBC science and environment news easily accessible and a good way to keep up to date with new and interesting science.
Mongabay is a personal favourite of mine. They’re a nonprofit environmental science and news platform with journalists from all over the world covering such a vast variety of —-. They have their own ocean feature section, as well as others such as rainforests, indigenous peoples, deforestation, herps and mammals to name just a few. Their journalists are often on the forefront of conservation, and their articles aren’t just research based but often pieces on current social conversation efforts. To top it off, they also have their own podcast!
I’ve loved reading National Geographic articles since I was a child, and their work is a big part of what inspired me to go into marine biology. If you aren’t already familiar with NatGeo they’ve been on the forefront of nature and travel writing, with many pieces directly from explorers, scientists, conservationists and changemakers. While many of their articles are free to read, they do have some behind a paywall, with a subscription service for full access.
Eco magazine focus on Environment, Coastal and Offshore (ECO) news, leading on current news in industry. Not only do they have a monthly issue magazine, they also feature press releases on new research, features pieces and also have a big section for opportunities within the industry.
Phys.org offers press releases on current research across a wide range of topics including Biology, Earth, Astronomy & space. They have one of the bigger collection of press releases making it a useful site to be able to keep up to date with current research.
Other sites that I don’t use frequently but that are great for marine biology, environmental or new science research are: Science Daily, New scientist and Nature
These are just a drop in the ocean of suggestions, and platforms that I personally use to keep in the loop with marine news. This is by no means an exhaustive list, and if you have any suggestions or recommendations, please let me know! I’d love to branch out and find new sources!
